It’s me, Fred

I started behind a barber chair.

Not the usual route into headshot photography. But cutting hair and photographing people turn out to share the same goal: putting someone at ease while helping them look their best.

I grew up visiting my dad at Stuart Photo, the local camera store where he worked, and that’s where I first got my hands on a camera. Making a living with one came later, though. First I was a barber.

I started photographing my clients’ haircuts for Instagram, just to show off the work. Somewhere in there it flipped. I became truly passionate about making portraits, and that turned into a full-time business. Since 2017, the studio has expanded four times.

Why I work the way I work

Standing in front of a camera takes some getting used to, and nearly everyone who books tells me the same thing: they don’t feel photogenic. So the session is built around that. Expression coaching throughout, images reviewed as we shoot, the pace set by you, and a result you’re glad to put your name to.

I train with Peter Hurley, one of the best-known headshot photographers working today, and those techniques run through every session. Technique is only half of it though. The rest is reading your energy, and meeting you there.

Outside the studio

I like trying new restaurants with my wife Tara, or getting up to North Florida to see my sons. In January I started taking exercise seriously again.

I’m the past Vice President of The Creek District of Arts & Entertainment, and I currently sit on the board of The Inner Truth Project. Both do real good on the Treasure Coast.

“I picked Fred as our photographer based on the great portraits on his website — and he did not disappoint. He put our whole staff at ease and made the entire process easy.”
